Lighting Ceiling Fans
Lighting ceiling fans offer a very practical and attractive addition to rooms in any home. Their ability to both
add light and circulate air in a room adds a rare double feature for things like this. The style it can add to a
room is rather obvious, but what is commonly less obvious is how the fan actually is used to provide comfort to the
people in the room. I will explain the use of lighting ceiling fans.
Most common ceiling fans have 2 directions that the blades rotate in. There is actually a specific reason for
this. It is due to how they are to provide comfort for the people in the room. Contrary to popular belief, lighted
ceiling fans are not only to be used to only blow air on people in the summer months to keep them cool.
In the summer, the ceiling fan should be rotating so that it blows downwards on people to help keep them cooler.
This works by allowing the body’s natural perspiration system to work more efficiently to keep your body cooler. As
moisture evaporates away from your skin, it takes heat with it resulting in your body being able to shed of excess
heat. This is how it works. The part that people do not usually know about ceiling fans is that the blades
rotation is normally to be reversed in the winter time.
You want to reverse the rotation of the blade to be sucking air up in the winter for a very good reason. Heat
tends to rise, and in the winter months there can be a few degrees difference in the temperature of the air at the
top of the room compared to the air near the floor. This results in people usually spending more of their time in
the cooler air as we are usually closer to the floor than we are to the ceiling.
With the blades of the fan sucking the air up, on the lowest setting mind you, it forces the warmer air at the
ceiling to move towards to floor to replace the cold air that is being sucked up. It is important that the fan is
at the lowest setting so it does not create a breeze which would simply cool the people down like it would in the
summer.
As you can see, lighting ceiling fans can not only provide a nice light and mood for a room, they can help keep
the people in the room more comfortable year round.
